AntennaSearch (US only)

AntennaSearch looks up FCC-registered towers and antennas near any US address, free. It’s registration data straight from the source, which is both its strength and its weakness: many working cell sites sit on rooftops and structures that don’t require individual FCC registration, so real sites can be missing, and entries can lag reality. The interface is from another era, and it’s US-only — but it’s a decent cross-check.

Method 3: Clues from your own phone

Your phone won’t hand you a map, but it knows things.

Field Test Mode (and its hard limits)

On an iPhone, dial 3001#12345# and you’ll land in Field Test Mode: live engineering numbers about the cell you’re connected to, including signal strength in dBm. You get cryptic cell identifiers, not coordinates.

Worth being blunt about: iOS doesn’t expose serving-cell data to third-party apps at all. No App Store app can tell you “you’re connected to this tower,” and anyone implying otherwise is overselling. What an app can do is show every known tower around you and let you infer the likely one from carrier, distance and direction.

Watch how your signal behaves

Low-tech, surprisingly effective: walk your home or property and watch the signal. If your connection is consistently best in the southeast corner and dies in the northwest, your serving tower is very likely somewhere to the southeast. How to read a cell tower map

Finding pins on a map is step one. Reading them right is what makes the map useful.

  • Carrier. Each entry represents one operator’s equipment. One physical mast often hosts several carriers’ antennas — tower companies lease the same structure to multiple networks — so seeing three “towers” stacked at one spot usually means one structure with three tenants.
  • Generation. 2G and 3G entries linger in databases while carriers shut those networks down. For everyday use, what matters is your carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G sites.
  • Distance and bearing. Distance tells you what’s plausible; bearing tells you where to point. Low-band LTE around 600–900 MHz can serve phones 10+ miles (16 km) out in flat terrain, mid-band typically manages a few miles, and mmWave 5G often reaches only a few hundred meters.
  • Closest is not automatically yours. Phones pick cells based on band, signal quality and load — not straight-line distance. Every tower map you’ll find — app or website — is aggregated from public and community-sourced data, because carriers generally don’t publish exact coordinates for their sites. That means positions are close but not surveyed-exact: expect a pin to land near the real structure, sometimes tens of meters off, occasionally on the wrong side of a street.
