No buildings, no hills, no trees — just a clear shot between your boat and every tower on the surrounding shorelines and islands. Sailors routinely hold a usable connection 10–20 km (5–10 nautical miles) from the nearest mast, far beyond what the same phone manages in a city. The trick is knowing where those masts actually are, because at sea the difference between full bars and nothing is often just which side of an island you anchor behind.
Why signal behaves differently over water
Two facts drive everything else in this guide.
First: over water, range is limited by the horizon, not by obstacles. Plan your route around real towers
While you still have a solid connection in port, spend five minutes on the map:
- Check the islands along your route. Filter to your carrier and note which islands and stretches of coast have towers. An inhabited island almost always has at least one site; an uninhabited one almost never does.
- Pick anchorages with line of sight. A tower 8 km away with open water between you is better than one 3 km away behind a ridge. Anchoring in a pretty cove that’s shadowed from every mast is the classic mistake — beautiful, and offline.
- Note the bearings. Write down (or screenshot) the direction of the best towers from each planned stop. If the forecast turns and you need to send files or check weather models, you’ll know exactly which way to point.

Honest limits: where cellular ends
Beyond the radio horizon, no booster helps — roughly 30–50 km out (depending on tower and antenna height), the Earth itself blocks the path, and cellular is over. Passage-making offshore means satellite (Starlink, Iridium, or your phone’s satellite SOS features for emergencies). Rarely, atmospheric ducting carries signal absurd distances over warm seas; enjoy it when it happens, plan as if it won’t.
One more honesty note: tower positions come from aggregated public and community data, so an island mast might sit a few hundred meters from its pin. Over open water that error barely matters — the bearing is still right.
