1. You’re just far from the tower

2. Your building is blocking it (low-E glass is the usual suspect)
Energy-efficient windows carry a microscopic metallic coating that can knock 20–30 dB off a cell signal — up to a 99.9% power cut from the glass alone. Metal roofs, foil-backed insulation, concrete and brick pile on more loss. Plenty of new builds are accidental Faraday cages.
Confirm it: signal is fine in the yard, terrible on the couch. A 20+ dB indoor/outdoor gap is the fingerprint.

3. Terrain is in the way

Bars measure strength, not how many people share the cell. At rush hour, at a stadium, in a dense neighborhood on a Friday night, a perfectly strong signal can deliver almost nothing because the tower’s capacity is spoken for.
Confirm it: speed tests swing wildly by time of day while your dBm stays steady.
Fix it: you can’t add capacity, but you can dodge: offload to Wi-Fi, schedule big downloads off-peak, or check whether another carrier has more (or closer) sites serving your area.
5. Your phone camped on the wrong band
Carriers run several frequency layers from the same towers, and networks steer phones between them. Sometimes you get parked on a distant low-band signal that’s “strong enough” while a faster mid-band layer sits unused.

8. Weather (real, but smaller than you think)

Confirm it: problems appear only during or right after storms, on a connection that’s weak on a good day.
