Types of Cell Towers Explained: Macro, Small Cell, DAS and More
Learn the main types of cell towers — macro masts, rooftop sites, stealth trees, small cells, DAS and COWs — what each looks like and how far it reaches.
There are six main types of cell towers you’ll run into: macro towers (the classic steel giants), rooftop sites, stealth towers disguised as trees and flagpoles, small cells bolted to street poles, indoor DAS systems, and temporary cells on wheels. Once you can tell them apart, you start seeing the network everywhere — and you get better at chasing signal, because each type has a completely different reach.
Consider this your field guide. For each type: what it looks like, where it lives, and how far it serves.
Macro towers: the steel workhorses
This is the tower in your head — 50 to 200 feet (15–60 m) of steel carrying the panels that blanket whole regions with coverage. Macros come in three body types:
- Lattice towers — three- or four-legged steel frameworks, wide at the base, tapering upward. The strongest of the bunch, so they carry the most equipment and often host several carriers at once.
- Monopoles — a single steel tube with antennas crowning the top. The suburban default: smaller footprint, easier zoning conversation.
- Guyed masts — skinny masts held upright by wire ropes anchored far from the base. Cheap height, but the anchors need land, so you’ll mostly find them in open country.
Look closer at any of them and you’ll spot the anatomy: flat panel antennas grouped into (usually) three “sectors” facing different directions, and round microwave dishes — the drums — hauling data back to the network where fiber doesn’t run. Rooftop sites: hiding in plain sight
In towns and cities, the “tower” is usually a building. Carriers rent roof space and bolt panels to parapets, cluster them on penthouse walls, or tuck them behind screens painted to match the brick. Office blocks, hotels, apartment buildings, parking garages — if it’s tall and downtown, it probably moonlights as a cell site.
Next time you’re on a city street, look up and count antennas; it changes how you see a skyline. And when a tower map drops a pin on a random hotel, that’s not a glitch — the hotel is the tower.

Stealth towers: fake trees, flagpoles and church crosses
Zoning boards dislike bare steel, so an entire industry builds camouflage:
- Monopines and monopalms — monopoles dressed as pine or palm trees. The tells: branches spaced with suspicious regularity, a trunk far too thick, and often a “tree” standing 20 feet taller than everything else around it. Arizona even has antenna-bearing fake saguaro cactuses.
- Flagpoles — an oversized pole with a fat cylindrical section (the radome) hiding the antennas inside. Perfectly patriotic, quietly radiating.
- Church steeples and crosses — panels concealed behind fiberglass replicas of the original architecture; the congregation gets rent, the carrier gets height.
- Water tanks, silos and clock towers — antennas ringed around existing tall structures, sometimes painted to match.
The giveaway is rarely up top — it’s at ground level. A fenced compound, equipment cabinets, thick conduit running up the structure: that “tree” has a utility bill.
Small cells: the shoebox on the light pole
Small cells are the opposite philosophy: instead of one big site covering miles, mount a backpack-sized radio on a streetlight and cover a block or three — typically a few hundred meters (roughly 500–2,000 ft). Cities are sprouting them by the thousands because they add capacity exactly where crowds are, and because fast-but-fragile spectrum like mmWave 5G only works over short distances anyway.
Spot them on light poles, utility poles and building corners: small gray or white boxes, sometimes with a cylinder antenna on top. If your map shows a dense cluster of sites along a downtown street, you’re probably looking at small cells, not six separate towers.
DAS: the indoor network you never see
A distributed antenna system (DAS) solves a brutal problem: 60,000 people in a concrete stadium, all posting video at once. One signal source feeds dozens or hundreds of small antennas — those discreet white domes on the ceilings of stadiums, airports, malls, tunnels and convention centers — via fiber and coax. Many are “neutral host” systems shared by all carriers.
DAS is why you can have service three levels underground in an airport. You generally won’t see its individual antennas on an outdoor tower map, though — it’s a building-by-building solution rather than a mapped site.
COWs: cell towers on wheels
When coverage needs to appear overnight, carriers roll out a COW — a Cell on Wheels: trailer, telescoping mast, radios and a generator. Its cousin, the COLT (Cell on Light Truck), does the same from a flatbed. You’ll see them at festivals, big games and fairs, and after hurricanes or wildfires knock permanent sites offline.
They’re also a good reminder that the network is a living thing. Sites get built, upgraded, moved and retired constantly, which is why every tower database — including ours — is a continuously refreshed estimate rather than a fixed record.

Why tower type matters when you’re hunting signal
If you’re aiming an antenna or a booster, you want a macro or rooftop site on a useful band — not a nearby small cell that only speaks short-range spectrum. If a map pin sits “on” an office building, expect antennas at roof height, which changes where line of sight comes from.
