1. Find your nearest tower and use the right side of the house

Everything else on this list depends on one fact: which direction your signal comes from. Filter to your carrier, find the closest useful tower, and note its direction.

Now favor the rooms on that side of the house. Moving your desk or your usual couch spot from the far side to the tower side is free and often worth more than any gadget. 2. Get near a window — the right window

Glass passes radio waves far better than brick or concrete, so windows are natural signal doors. The exception is low-E glass: its thin metallic-oxide coating, great for insulation, can knock tens of dB off a cell signal. If your bars are mysteriously worse near a brand-new window than an old single-pane one, that’s why.

3. Turn on Wi-Fi calling

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling. Your calls and texts route over your home internet instead of the weak cellular link, and handoff is automatic. If your indoor signal is genuinely unusable, this is the single biggest quality-of-life fix on this list, and it’s free.

It doesn’t fix cellular data indoors — but indoors you’re on Wi-Fi anyway, so in practice most people stop caring.

4. Rethink your case and your grip

Thick cases with metal plates, magnetic wallet attachments, or battery packs sit directly over your phone’s antennas. So does your hand when you wrap it around the edges. In a strong-signal area you’ll never notice; at the margins, a couple of dB is the difference between a call that holds and one that drops. Marginal homes deserve minimal cases.

5. Toggle airplane mode for ten seconds

Phones are lazy about switching cells. As you move around the house, yours may cling to the tower or band it connected to at the front door. Flipping airplane mode on and off forces a fresh scan, and the phone often comes back on a stronger cell or a better band. Free, instant, and worth doing right after you relocate to the good side of the house.

6. Don’t buy the gimmicks

Stick-on “signal booster” patches, foil reflectors, and mystery dongles that plug into your charging port can’t work — a passive sticker has no power, no amplifier and no meaningful antenna, so it physically cannot add signal. If a product promises more bars without an outdoor antenna or a powered amplifier somewhere in the chain, keep your money. 7. Ask your carrier about a femtocell

A femtocell (or “microcell”) is a small box from your carrier that creates a tiny, legitimate cell inside your house, using your broadband as backhaul. Availability varies a lot — several carriers have scaled these back in favor of Wi-Fi calling — but if your home is a true dead zone with good internet, one support chat is worth it.

8. Install a signal booster — and aim it right

A real booster has three parts: an outdoor donor antenna, an amplifier, and an indoor antenna. It amplifies signal that already exists outside, which means two things. 9. Add an external antenna to your router or hotspot

If your home internet is 4G/5G fixed wireless, or you rely on a hotspot with external antenna ports (TS-9 or SMA), a directional outdoor antenna is often better value than a whole-home booster.
