Why AR beats squinting at a 2D map
A 2D map is the right tool for planning: comparing carriers, counting sites, reading distances. But the moment you’re standing outside trying to relate the map to the actual world, it demands mental rotation — hold the phone, find north, rotate the map in your head, guess at a landmark. Accuracy limits (and how to work with them)
An honest AR view is only as good as its inputs, and it’s worth knowing where the slack is:
- The compass is the weak link. Phone compasses drift and get deflected near metal — car roofs, railings, HVAC units, rebar in concrete. If markers look rotated relative to reality, calibrate by waving the phone in a figure-8 and step away from large metal objects.
- GPS adds a few meters. Normally harmless at tower-spotting distances; positions matter less the farther the target.
- Tower positions are estimates. Ours and everyone’s — tower databases aggregate public and community-sourced data, so a marker may sit slightly off the visible mast. Trust the marker for direction and distance, then let your eyes lock onto the actual structure nearby.
- Distance labels are straight-line. A tower 1.9 mi (3 km) away “through” a hill is still labeled 1.9 mi — the label doesn’t know about the hill, but your eyes, uniquely in AR, can see it.
The practical rule: use AR to get 95% of the answer instantly, then confirm the last 5% by looking at what’s physically there.
FAQ
Do I need special hardware for AR tower finding?
No — a reasonably recent iPhone is enough, since the AR view only needs the camera, GPS and compass. Cell Tower Finder & Locator runs on iPhone and iPad, and on Apple Vision Pro as well.
Why isn’t the marker exactly on the tower?
Small errors stack: compass drift, a few meters of GPS uncertainty, and database positions that are close but not surveyed-exact. Direction and distance remain reliable — calibrate the compass with a figure-8 motion, then match the marker to the structure you can actually see.
Does the AR view work in remote areas without service?
GPS and the compass work fine without cell service — the sensors don’t need a network. The tower data itself has to load from somewhere, though, so open the area in the app while you still have a connection rather than first trying it from the middle of nowhere.
Can the AR view show which tower my phone is connected to?
No app on iOS can — Apple doesn’t expose serving-cell information to third parties. What AR shows is every known tower around you, which usually lets you infer the likely one from your carrier, the distances and the directions.
