A practical antenna setup guide for 4G/5G home internet: pick the right tower, place the antenna well, aim it with a real bearing, and verify actual gains.

A good antenna setup for 4G/5G home internet comes down to three decisions: which tower you point at, where the antenna or gateway physically sits, and how you verify that a change actually helped. If your fixed wireless is fast some evenings and crawling on others, this is usually the difference. The sequence: find your carrier’s best tower on a map, place the antenna (or the whole gateway) where it can see that tower, aim it, then verify with the router’s own signal numbers plus a speed test.

First, know which setup you have

Fixed wireless comes in two flavors, and they’re tuned differently:

  • Carrier gateway, no antenna ports. Most gateways from T-Mobile Home Internet or Verizon 5G Home style services are sealed units — the antennas are inside the box. Your levers are placement and orientation: which window, which floor, which way it faces. That’s less limiting than it sounds; moving a gateway across the house can change speeds dramatically.
  • Router or hotspot with external ports. Third-party cellular routers (and many hotspots) expose SMA or TS-9 connectors, which let you attach an external antenna — ideally a directional one mounted outside. This is the setup with the highest ceiling, and it inherits every aiming rule below.

Either way, the first job is the same.

Step 1: Find the tower worth talking to

Open a tower map, filter it to your carrier, and then filter by generation so you’re looking at sites that carry the service you’re paying for. Don’t automatically pick the nearest pin. A site 3 miles (5 km) away across open ground often beats one a mile (1.6 km) away behind a hill, a warehouse or a stand of trees.

Step 2: The right antenna setup for 4G/5G home internet

Placement is where free performance hides.

  • Window beats interior wall. Exterior walls and everything inside the house attenuate signal. A gateway buried by the TV in the middle of the floor plan is running with a handicap.
  • The right window beats any window. Use the tower bearing from Step 1 and pick the window facing it. This single change is the highest-value move for sealed gateways.
  • Beware low-E glass. Modern energy-efficient windows carry a metallic coating that attenuates cellular signal savagely — sometimes a coated window is worse than the wall next to it. If a “perfect” window tests badly, that’s a likely reason; try the frame edge, another window, or accept that outdoors is the answer.
  • Height helps. Second floor beats first, and an outdoor antenna above the roofline beats everything, because it clears the clutter — cars, fences, neighboring roofs — that sits in the first meters of the signal path.
  • Outdoor directional is the ceiling. For routers with ports, a cross-polarized directional antenna mounted high and aimed at your target tower is the full-strength version of this whole exercise. Connect both cables on MIMO antennas — each carries a separate stream.

Step 3: Aim it properly

For directional antennas, you need a bearing, not a hunch. Step 4: Keep the cable run honest

If you’re running coax from an outdoor antenna, the cable is part of the antenna system — and it only ever subtracts:

  • Short runs win. Every meter of coax costs signal; thin bargain cable costs the most. A long, cheap run can quietly burn several dB — remember that losing 3 dB means half your signal power is gone.
  • Buy quality for long runs. If the antenna-to-router distance is more than about 25 ft (8 m), use low-loss cable rather than the thin stuff bundled with cheap kits.
  • Mind the connectors. Match connector types properly (SMA vs. RP-SMA trips people up), seat them snugly, and weatherproof outdoor joints. A corroded connector can undo an entire careful install.

Step 5: Verify with router stats and a speed test

Your router or gateway almost certainly reports its signal metrics — in its admin page or companion app. Check them before and after every change. A rough rule-of-thumb guide for LTE/5G:

RSRP is raw signal strength; SINR is signal quality against interference — and SINR is often what a better aim or a cleaner window improves most, which translates directly into throughput.

Then run speed tests — but run them twice a day. A test at 11 am tells you about your link; a test at 9 pm tells you about your link plus congestion. If off-peak is fast and peak is painful with the same signal numbers, the tower is loaded, and that’s a tower-choice problem rather than an aiming problem.

When a different direction beats a closer tower

This comes up constantly with fixed wireless, so it deserves its own section. Reasons to aim your antenna at tower B even though tower A is closer:

  • Obstruction. A is behind terrain or buildings; B has clear line of sight. Clean path wins.
  • Congestion. A serves a dense neighborhood and sags every evening; B is farther but lightly loaded. Your twice-a-day speed tests reveal this.
  • Band. A only carries low-band where you are; B carries mid-band 5G. If B’s signal is adequate, its capacity ceiling is far higher.

FAQ

Do I need an outdoor antenna for 4G/5G home internet?

Not necessarily — exhaust the free options first: the tower-facing window, height, orientation. If your best indoor placement still shows weak RSRP or single-digit SINR, an outdoor directional antenna is the upgrade that actually moves the needle (assuming your equipment has ports for it).

Directional or omnidirectional antenna for a home setup?

A home doesn’t move, so directional is usually right — it trades the unneeded 360° coverage for gain toward your chosen tower. Pick omnidirectional only if your equipment genuinely bounces between towers in different directions and you can’t or won’t commit to one.

Will an external antenna raise my actual speeds?

If you’re signal-limited — weak RSRP, poor SINR — yes, often substantially, because cleaner signal lets the modem use faster modulation and better bands. If you’re congestion-limited, no antenna fixes an overloaded tower; the fix there is aiming at a different site or adjusting expectations.

My carrier’s gateway has no antenna ports. Am I stuck?
